All foster carers are assessed to determine their suitability in undertaking the tasks associated with fostering. The maximum timescale in which the assessment, based around an intensive piece of social work, will be completed is five months. A range of skills will be examined during the process through discussion, observation and supporting evidence linked to competences.

The assessment is aligned to ‘Skills to Foster Training’, which is delivered over three intensive days using a variety of learning techniques, including role-play. The training examines areas from the angle of environment and personal health and safety to challenging behviour and the application of safer caring principles. A satisfactory assessment process ultimately leads to formal approval by Homestead Fostering Panel prior to any placements being made.
All approved foster carers are linked to a monthly support group facilitated by experienced staff within Homestead Fostering Agency, designed to offer moral support, heightened awareness and the development of skills through current information.
